Heather and Chris

Dear Expectant Parent,

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. We hope this letter gives you a glimpse of who we are and a sense of what we’re all about. We can imagine the difficult decisions you face – know that we admire your strength as you consider making an adoption plan for your child. If there is one thing we hope to communicate, it’s that placing your child with us will mean a loving home, a supportive family, and a vibrant community.

About Us

We are an easy-going couple who met during our first weekend at college in 2004 and started dating not long after that. We hit it off quickly! We made each other laugh so easily, could be ourselves around one another, and found in the other person someone with a big heart-Chris would freely give his pickles to Heather (her favorite) when they got sandwiches!  We have been together for 19 years now, 13 of them married. We knew early on in our relationship that we wanted to get married and start a family. After years of trying, we decided to pursue adoption. We could not be more excited about starting our adoption journey!

We enjoy doing pretty much everything together, from going all out decorating the yard for Halloween to walking our two year old corgi, Sylvie, all over our neighborhood. When we aren’t catering to Sylvie’s every whim – who trained who, here? – you can spot us at the movies (we’re both big movie nerds), at the hardware store trying to figure out what might be cool to plant in the yard the next season, or around the firepit with friends. And Sunday nights? Those are reserved for family dinners at Chris’s parents’ house. His parents, two sisters, nieces, nephew, brother-in-law, and all of the family dogs meet every week for dinner. Spending time with our big families helps to chase away the Sunday Scaries and makes for a good start to the week ahead.

Our favorite time of the year is the annual family trip up to Door County, Wisconsin. Every summer, the whole family packs into cars and drives up north to spend a week in the woods, on the water, and just generally enjoying the company of the people we love. Family is supremely important to us, and we all love making memories together.

About Heather

Heather loves stories in any medium. She loves to read, enjoys a good television show, movie, plays, musicals, and even writes as a hobby. In fact, it’s tradition to go and see a play, musical, or exhibit in Chicago whenever her family is in town. Though she swore she would never be one, Heather has developed an amazing green thumb (with the help of her mom and mother-in-law) and has found joy in gardening. Heather has been working on the billing side of healthcare for the past 10 years, and though she might not love numbers, she does love solving a good puzzle in order to get a claim paid.

About Chris

Chris is a self-described nerd who loves history, music, and learning new things. If there’s a cool exhibit at a museum nearby, he will definitely make plans to see it. He enjoys catching up with friends, Zumba with his sister, and being creative by editing video or building yard decorations. Chris worked as a teacher for five years before changing careers. Now, he works at a non-profit that awards scholarships to high school students so that getting an education is more affordable.

About Sylvie

Heather and Chris are both capital D “DOG PEOPLE.” Our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Sylvie, is the star of the neighborhood. She has made lots of four-legged friends throughout the neighborhood and is a hit with all of the kids who ask to stop and pet her while we’re out on a walk. One of the great things about having a dog is that training her was a way for us to be together. We make a game out of training, so at any given moment on a night in our house, someone might find us playing hide and seek with the dog after work.

Our Neck of the Woods

We chose to settle down in Des Plaines, a suburb 30 minutes outside of Chicago, because of what the community represents. Chris grew up in nearby Niles and worked at a local high school, the same one he graduated from. Heather grew up not far away in Deerfield. Our neighborhood is exactly what we grew up thinking a community should be; it is diverse, inclusive, and full of people and experiences that represent all walks of life.

In Closing

We have worked hard to build a life full of love together, and we are so excited to share that with a baby. Our families are large, loud, and full of big personalities. But more than that, they have the biggest hearts that they cannot wait to share.

We can promise to raise a child in a home that values love, empathy, kindness, and inclusion. We do our best to live these values every day and will parent in such a way that a child will see these ideals in action.

Our hope is that this letter has been a window into our lives. We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to read it, as well as your courage while navigating what is probably a difficult time in your life. If we could help bring some certainty to just one part of making an adoption plan, let it be certainty that a child in our home will be loved, supported, and given every opportunity to grow and be great.

If you would like to know more about us, feel free to email us at ChrisAndHeatherACFB@gmail.com, or reach out to our adoption counselor, Linda Fiore, at (773) 919-5702 or linda@centerforfamily.com.

Sincerely,
Chris & Heather
